About this video tutorial:

After almost 3 years of shooting, carrying a small (and sometimes very large) video camera with me around the world, I am feeling confident that now is time to tell you my story. This series of video tutorials is geared toward the enthusiast to intermediate level photographer wanting to get started with, or fine-tune, long exposure photography techniques. This video is for you if you've never tried to shoot long exposures and are intrigued to give it a try. Or, maybe you have experimenting for a while, but now you are looking for more consistent results to take your skills to the next level.

These video tutorials follow me along my journey as a fine-art long exposure photographer. We start in the classroom where we begin by reviewing my portfolio together. We move on to discuss equipment, and talk about neutral density filters next. The camera follows me along to a shooting location, where I take you step-by-step through the process of taking long exposure photographs. I talk about camera settings and calculating exposure times with ND filters. I talk about lens selection and whether or not to use long exposure noise reduction. Despite all these technical considerations, I do make sure to discuss weather, cloud and water movement, and most importantly, composition theory and creative opportunities as they apply to fine-art long exposure photography.

Back at my studio, I download the images and discuss the results with you. I share more image samples from my portfolio to illustrate important concepts such as picking specific exposure times, and we delve into the digital darkroom and process images from color to black and white. For this presentation I will not only show you simple, yet effective, methods of image editing, I will talk about how these techniques can help you realize your vision and let you create unique images as a fine-art photographer. I will show you HOW to do it, but also explain WHY to do it.

As this video tutorial is geared towards the enthusiast to intermediate photographer, I will keep post processing techniques limited to simple software solutions (such as Silver Efex Pro). We will dip our toes into Photoshop from time to time, but this is not an advanced post processing tutorial (please see my separate tutorial video for that information).

My goal is to show you how to master your shooting techniques so that you can keep your post production to a minimum. You'd be surprised how much can be achieved with 'just' simple software solutions. My aim is that after watching this tutorial you will feel not only confident and comfortable with the long exposure shooting technique, but also feel that same confidence when it comes to understanding the creative opportunities these techniques can have for your photography. I want you to be excited to go out shooting and be proud of your resulting images!

About this video tutorial:

Due to popular request, Marc has created a very unique video workshop that will give you an intimate 'behind-the-scenes' view of his photography. Geared towards intermediate to advanced photographers as well as working professionals, we will be discussing advanced post production workflows as they apply to my award-winning imagery.

In the past 10 years, Marc has won numerous international awards for several bodies and series of his work, ranging from portraits, nudes, landscapes, architecture to several series photographed using long exposure techniques. Marc will draw from this experience to outline a list of concrete tips and methods you can use to move your photography to the next level.

The next major focus of this video workshop is a detailed behind-the-scenes look at several of Marc's award-winning images. Over the years, Marc has been using a great variety of cameras and lenses, including the latest digital backs. A special mention will be made with respect to specialized camera equipment including working with technical cameras and digital backs from Phase One and Hasselblad.

Marc will talk about the work and discuss vision, scope, real-life challenges and opportunities. He will then take you step-by-step through the process of shooting and editing the work, including full Photoshop workflows with no shortcuts (such as time-lapsed workflows). In doing demonstrations, Marc will focus on the essential every-day skills that took him years to acquire, but will also address much more specialized and sophisticated techniques.

Several, if not all, of the demonstrated techniques will be applicable to other areas of photography and not just long exposures alone.

About your host: Marc Koegel

Reputation is earned over time. Marc has been photographing since his early teens, and teaching since his early twenties. After graduating with an economics degree, Marc decided to pursue photography full-time and earned a diploma in professional commercial photography. He started tecahing within months of graduation, and opened his own photography school a short year thereafter. Vancouver Photo Workshops was incorporated in 2004, and in those 10 years has grown to be largest family owned photography training facility in all of Canada. In 2007, Marc was commissioned to put together Canada's first all-digital, fully accredited, full-time photography diploma program. He served as the department head and lead instructor until 2009, but still teaches courses there today. Since 2006, Marc has been teaching his fine-art long exposure photography techniques to 1000's of students in the traditional classroom setting, and since 2011 he has added an online course that has attracted students from over 26 countries.

Marc's photography has won several international awards including the IPA (International Photo Awards), Spider Awards and PX3 (Prix De La Photographie Paris). Marc's work has also been featured on numerous web sites and photography blogs and recently on the Phase One website.

Few photographers have the combination of photographic as well as educational experience Marc is known for. Years behind the lens and in front of students all add up to valuable experience. Learn with Marc and let his help you to 'achieve your vision'!
